BERTIE COUNTY, N.C. (WAVY) — A man is dead after an auto-pedestrian accident on Thursday afternoon in Bertie County, North Carolina.

The Bertie County Sheriff’s Office says the 67-year-old William Lovegrove was was found dead on arrival when police reached the scene at NC 308 near Roxobel. Deputies received the call around 3 p.m.

Initially, officials reported this accident as a hit-and-run. North Carolina Highway Patrol Trooper J.V. Reid tells 10 On Your Side that further investigation revealed the driver did remain on scene, therefore it was not a hit-and-run.

The driver, 62-year-old Hugh Battle, was arrested and charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle the same day. He is currently being held on bond.

Reid said Lovegrove and Battle were both traveling east on NC 308 that afternoon. Battle was passing another car in the eastbound lane when he lost control of his Nissan Altima.

Battle struck a road sign before hitting Lovegrove on his bike. He then crossed the road and traveled on the right side before coming to rest in a ditch, according to Reid.
