Early morning dispute leads to shooting in Newport News

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — Newport News Police say a woman was taken to the hospital on Monday morning after being shot.

Officers arrived to the 2200 block of Jefferson Avenue just after 6 a.m. to find a woman with a non life-threatening gunshot wound.

Officers were told that a dispute had taken place before the shooting. Jerome Hillian was arrested for shooting.

Hillian and the victim were in a relationship at the time, according to police.

Police say Hillian was charged with malicious wounding, possession of a firearm by a felon, reckless handling of a firearm and sure of a firearm in a felony.

The incident is under investigation.
