HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — A 12-year-old girl was sent to the hospital with life-threatening injuries on Tuesday, after she was reportedly shot inside of a home.

Officers were called to Laguard Drive, off of Powhatan Parkway, shortly before 1:30 p.m.

“I went out there to check what’s going on and the next thing I seen, the young girl was laying inside the yard on the walk,” said neighbor Paulette Edwards. “I seen the ambulance come and get her, I know she got shot in the head.”

At last check, the girl was listed in critical condition.

Police are questioning a teenage suspect, who they believe shot the girl unintentionally.

“We do believe this is an isolated incident,” said Sgt. Matt Bond. “We are currently speaking with an 18-year-old male who was handling a firearm within the residence and at some point in time the firearm discharged and struck the 12-year-old victim.”

That male had not been identified and had not been charged at last check with police. Investigators have not confirmed what the relation is between the suspect and victim, nor have they stated if the two were alone when the shooting occurred.

Neighbors told 10 On Your Side that a mother lives at the home with several children.
