PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – Police say a 15-year-old male has been arrested for allegedly shooting a police officer multiple times Monday afternoon.

Officials say the female officer was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, where she underwent surgery. The officer remains in critical but stable condition, according to the Portsmouth Police Department.

“Prayers are with her and her family,” said Det. Misty Holley. “She’s a strong individual, so we’re hopeful.”

Throughout the afternoon, police officers from multiple jurisdictions were seen entering the hospital.

“When you see all them officers, you know it’s something bad,” said Dawn Brown, who was waiting at the emergency room. “I’m praying for all of them … it’s just sad, you know, they’re here to protect us and it’s sad they get injured in the process of doing things for us.”

Officers say the shooting happened at 2:45 p.m. on the 2500 block of Hickory Street in Mount Hermon. Shortly after, witnesses to the arrest say the suspect was taken into custody at the London Oaks Apartments nearby on High Street. Police taped off a large perimeter around the apartments for several hours.

“This is ridiculous. We got to get it together. I don’t know what it’s going to take other than praying to God.” said Tomeka Lathan, who has lived in Mount Hermon for 13 years.

A wrecker towed away a Portsmouth police cruiser from Hickory Street late Monday night. Police have not said whether or not the officer was inside the vehicle at the time of the shooting.

During the investigation, school buses from John Tyler Elementary and Mount Hermon Preschool were re-routed, according to Cherise Newsome, Portsmouth Public Information Officer. Middle and High school dismissals were not affected.

Parents were informed by robocall and division staff were at the scene.

Police departments throughout Hampton Roads sent the Portsmouth Police Department messages via social media. They, as well as neighbors, are hoping the officer makes a full recovery.

“She is trying to do her job to the best of her abilities,” said Lathan. “She got a family. She wants to make it home safe … The same way I want to come home safe to mine.”

Charges are pending against the 15-year-old suspect. Stay with WAVY.com for developments on this story.
