Loved ones demand answers in Portsmouth man’s shooting death

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Loved ones are demanding answers in the shooting death of a 46-year-old Portsmouth man.

“I don’t understand why someone would hurt him because he’s a person that never went out to hurt anybody.”

Portsmouth police were called to Barclay Avenue shortly before 8 a.m. Sunday.

James Street was reportedly discovered shot to death inside of a home.

His mother, Bertha Harrington, told 10 On Your Side he had lived there with a cousin. She says Street enjoyed sports and time with loved ones.

“He was loving… he was a father and a grandfather,” Harrington said. “Our family is large and they always spend time together, a lot of time together.”

Harrington said her son didn’t “hang in the streets.”

She is urging anyone with information to come forward.

“I need help to find out what happened to my son.”

On Monday night, Portsmouth officers walked the neighborhood as part of a R.E.S.E.T walk to help the community heal.

There is no suspect in custody or suspect description at this time. If you know anything that could help police, please contact 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.
