Woman dies after crash in Gloucester County

GLOUCESTER, Va. (WAVY) — A woman died after a two-vehicle crash Monday in Gloucester County.

The accident occurred just before 1:30 p.m. at the intersection of Route 17 and Powhatan Drive.

Virginia State Police say 91-year-old Clara F. Stafford, of Hayes, was driving a 1995 Ford F-50 pickup truck, heading southbound on Route 17 and approaching a traffic signal at the intersection with Powhatan Drive.

Stafford ignored the signal and hit the left side of a 2008 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck, according to police. 56-year-old Kathleen M. Mixon, a Gloucester County Parks & Tourism employee, was driving the Silverado, which was towing a large trailer with lawn equipment on it.

The crash caused the Silverado and the trailer to jack-knife in the middle of the intersection. The F-150 came to rest against the left side of the trailer.

State police say Stafford wasn’t wearing a seat belt. She was taken to Riverside Walter Reed Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
