NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – A 56-year-old man hit by a car in Norfolk Saturday night has died.

Emergency crews responded to a person being hit by a vehicle at the intersection of E. 26th St. and Monticello Ave., just before 9:45 p.m. Crews arrived to the scene and located the victim lying near the roadway. Medics took the man, identified as Derek A. Vennie, to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital where he died from his injuries.

Police say the investigation revealed a black Camero was traveling southbound on Monticello Avenue and struck Vennie as he tried to cross the street.

The driver stayed on the scene. Police say neither alcohol nor speed appears to be a factor with the driver. At this time, no charges have been filed.
