YORK COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) — Human skeletal remains found Friday evening off Goosley Road in Yorktown are believed to have been there for years, authorities say.
Officials were called to Goosley between Leigh and Crawford Road.
“Yesterday afternoon at approximately 6:30 p.m., we received a call about possible human remains,” said Captain Troy Lyons.
In a press conference held at the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office, they say this is currently being investigated as a suspicious death.
“It is believed that this individual had been at this location for several years,” he said.
Lyons states the remains are of an 18 to 25-year-old man who was found with clothing and an ID card. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is working to confirm the identification of the body and will release it once next of kin has been notified.
Lyons says the identification card was that of a white male but there are no open missing cases that would fit the profile.
He also stated that portions of the skeletal remains were visible, while others were covered by debris.
He did not have any information on who made the discovery and the original call to authorities.
Goosley Road was closed at Leigh Road and Crawford Road but has been reopened following the investigation.
The sheriff’s office does not believe this is related the missing persons case of Keir and Chloe Johnson. In a Facebook post Friday night, the sheriff’s office said investigators also do not believe it is related to the Colonial Parkway murders case.
