Suspect shot, killed in tactical situation in Newport News

Newport News, Va. (WAVY) — A suspect was killed after being shot by police in an early morning tactical situation in Newport News.

Lou Thurston with the Newport News Police Department told WAVY.com that call came in at 4:51 a.m. for a violent person inside the Pondo Cafe and Lounge on Jefferson Avenue. The call was later updated to an armed subject inside.

Officers responded and while on scene, heard multiple gunshots from inside the cafe. A tactical situation was called at 5:06 a.m.

Police said officers were unable to enter the cafe because the doors and windows were locked. A tactical team was eventually able to make entry and engaged the suspect.

The suspect was shot by an officer and was pronounced dead at the scene. There were no injuries to any officers.

According to police, the person who called in the incident was inside Pondo at the time. This person said he had been shot before the tactical team responded to the scene.

Police said this person was taken to a local hospital where he appeared to be in stable condition.

An investigation into the incident remains ongoing.

The officer involved in this shooting will be placed on paid administrative leave, according to police. A criminal and administrative investigation will be conducted, which is standard for any officer involved shooting.
