NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A 17-year-old boy was killed after being shot late Monday night in Norfolk, according to police.
Norfolk police say officers were called to the 1500 block of Wilson Road at 11 p.m.
The victim was found at the scene suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. Paramedics rushed him to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The victim was later identified as Deshawn Spencer.
A neighbor who did not want to be identified said she was terrified when she heard the shots, but was relieved to see the flashing lights arrive soon after.
“I heard people hollering and stuff, and I had already locked my doors, so when I saw the police lights come up, that’s when I opened my door and looked out again. I said, ‘Lord, something happened.'”
The woman has lived in the area for 13 years and says violence comes and goes. She’s lost her own loved ones under similar circumstances.
“It’s just terrible. These young people, they need to stop all this violent crime and stuff and try to love each other.”
She’s concerned there could be growing gang involvement in the streets.
“They don’t want to go to church, they don’t want to work, some of them who can work. They just need to put down these guns and think of something — do some type of activity out here in the neighborhood.”
As a mother who lost her own son too soon, she wants the victim’s family to know they’re in her prayers.
“I feel bad for the family. They all have my blessing and everything. I’m sorry everything happened like that.”
According to the city’s crime tracking website, this is the first homicide in the area in the past few months. However, there have been dozens of burglaries and assaults within a mile of the shooting.
Detectives are asking anyone with information on this shooting to call the Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.
