NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A Norfolk man has been charged with murder in connection with a deadly shooting Thursday night. Police arrested 29-year-old Maurice Hyman Tuesday.
Emergency crews were called to the 800 block of Bagnall Road shortly before 10:45 p.m. on April 20.
“All I remember was we dropped down and we got to crawling and we are trying to stay away from [someone] pointing the pistol at us, shooting,” neighbor Silvia Aquino said.
Police responded to the scene and found 34-year-old Zuton T. Carpenter suffering from gunshot wounds. He was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, but died shortly afterward.
“He was a really good brother. He was an innocent bystander,” Aquino said. “This wasn’t even for him.”
Aquino said this is just the latest tragedy in a string of shootings on the streets.
“I just wanna help a lot of my brothers and sisters learn how to live because we are stuck in surviving and this is insanity,” she said. “It keeps repeating itself.”
Police charged Hyman with second-degree murder and use of a firearm in commission of a felony. He is currently in the Norfolk City Jail with no bond.
