NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A 23-year-old man died following a shooting Thursday night in Norfolk.
Emergency crews were called to the 2200 block of Lafayette Boulevard, near Peronne Avenue, at 10:40 p.m. Officers found the man outside suffering from a gunshot wound.
He was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. The man was later identified as Keith M. Moore, who police say lived on Lafayette Boulevard.
On Friday, loved ones returned to the scene, holding a candlelight vigil.
Dozens held hands, praying and sharing stories about a young man they called “Bird.”
“I just want justice,” his sister, Decherra Cooke, told 10 On Your Side.
She will remember her brother as someone who loved to laugh and make others laugh. He was generous, and would give clothing to a homeless man in the neighborhood, she said.
“Every time that man went past my momma’s house, he stopped and spoke to my brother, and made sure he told him how gracious he was.”
Moore was expecting his first child, family members said.
“All he said, every day, for the last couple of weeks, all I hear is, ‘I’m gonna be the father I wanted.'”
Police have not released any information on any potential suspects or the motive for the shooting.
Family members said Moore was hanging outside, near his family’s home, when the shooting occurred.
