NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – Firefighters responded to a two-alarm house fire in the 3600 block of Sewells Point Road, Saturday evening.
“When I opened up my door, you could smell the smoke, see the smoke, and when I walked up there, you could see the flames up there,” said Elizabeth Wiggins, who lives nearby. “It was just terrible.”
Dispatch says the emergency call came in at 10:14 p.m. According to Norfolk Fire-Rescue Battalion Chief Brian Nichols, the garage attached to the home was fully engulfed in flames when units arrived on the scene.
“I guess the whole neighborhood is on fire,” said Kenny Trexler of his first reaction to the blaze. “I mean it scorched the house, it burnt the office building, they had to tear the gates down to get in.”
Damage was caused to both the home and garage, but the garage is a total loss. Nearby businesses also saw significant damage.
“It’s a shame that people can lose stuff like that, so I hope they get to the bottom of what happened,” said Wiggins.
No injuries have been reported.
