NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – Norfolk police are investigating an undetermined death after a body was recovered from the Little Creek channel in Ocean View Saturday afternoon.

Dispatch received the emergency call at 12:50 p.m. after someone spotted a body floating in the water near Bay Point Marina in the 9500 block of 30th Bay Street. When police arrived on scene, they recovered the body of 50-year-old Neil Donnelly from the water.

10 On Your Side spoke with residents who live in the marina and other residences near by. People say they were shocked to hear about Donnelly.

John Reindl, who lives in the marina, says he was fortunate enough to have met Donnelly at the marina’s restaurant a few weeks ago.

“He just tapped me on the shoulder and said ‘your glass is empty’. And I said yeah I’m about to go soon and he said ‘well let me buy you a beer’,” Reindl says.

Reindl says he and Donnelly connected through their love of boating and was upset to hear about Donnelly’s death. He says that Neil’s kindness will be missed in their tight-knit community.

“At least I got to meet him. I got to spend a couple of days with him. Just a nice guy. Just a nice guy. I feel sorry about what happened to him,” Reindl says.

Police have not determined the cause of death.

Police encourage anyone with information to call the Norfolk Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.
