NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – By sunrise Saturday morning USS George Washington was a short helicopter ride away.
Below in the ship’s hangar crew members are prepping the ship for what lies ahead. Now docked at Naval Station Norfolk crew members have plenty work ahead of them stripping the ship of its interior.
In August 2017, the GW is scheduled to be tugged, dead sticked to Newport News Shipyard for the nearly four year refueling complex overhaul.
So after nearly 25 years, that saw 12 deployments and 39,000 nautical miles sailed this year alone, the GW is now ready for a complete overhaul in Norfolk.
