NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A tractor-trailer overturned on Interstate 64 in Newport News Tuesday morning, after colliding with another car near the Denbigh Boulevard overpass.
Virginia State Police say the crash happened around 6:15 a.m.
A Kia attempted to pass a tractor-trailer on I-64 West using the right lane and shoulder. The two vehicles collided, causing the driver of the Kia, 56-year-old Victoria O. Hayes, to lose control, and run off the road and into the center median.
The driver of the tractor-trailer, 33-year-old Jermaine R. William, over-corrected, causing the vehicle to turn over on its side.
The accident shutdown all westbound lanes around the Denbigh Boulevard overpass for much of the Tuesday morning commute, resulting in major delays for motorists.
A detour was placed at Jefferson Avenue for drivers to navigate around the accident scene. Around 7 a.m., motorists were let by the accident scene on the left shoulder.
Back-ups from the accident stretched as far back as Victory Boulevard.
Traffic cameras showed the tractor-trailer on its side, blocking both I-64 West lanes. Emergency crews worked for several hours Tuesday morning to clear the scene.
State police say Hayes was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. She is facing an improper passing of another vehicle charge for the accident.
William was not injured in the crash. State police say both drivers were wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.
