One man in hospital after shooting in Newport News

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — Police are investigating a shooting that sent one man to the hospital Sunday morning in Newport News.

Officers say it happened at 1:58 a.m. on the 11000 block of Jefferson Avenue. When police arrived, they found a man with what appeared to be a non life-threatening gunshot wound to the leg area.

Police say it started as a verbal altercation between two men and spiraled into one of them being shot. Police say it is currently unknown if the victim and suspect knew each other prior to the shooting.

The victim is a 21-year-old Newport News resident. He was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, and is expected to be OK.

The only suspect information police have released is that a suspect was a man with a gun.
