PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — A 29-year-old man was killed Sunday night in a shooting on Dale Drive.
The emergency call came in at 7:51 p.m., according to police.
“It sounded like some cannonballs going off,” said Lashanta Finney, who lives next door to where the shooting took place. “It was loud, because it shook the windows and all that stuff.”
Police say a man was taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds to the head and upper body. The man, 29-year-old Keith C. Warren, died shortly after arriving at the hospital. Detectives have classified the case as a homicide.
“I heard the lady screaming and stuff and I came outside to see that it was a cool friend of ours,” said Finney.
She’s lived in the neighborhood for seven years and says the violence has gotten worse, but she was shocked to see her friend, known as “Cool K,” become a victim of it.
“He was a great person, a kind person, a cool, laid back person,” said Morris Elliott, who also lives in the area. “He didn’t bother anyone. He stayed to himself.”
It’s tragedies like these that motivate Elliott, who wants to stop the violence.
“We don’t have to participate in a combat environment, but you live in one. You live in one, so how do you protect yourself from that?” asked Elliott.
Elliott works as a mentor for young children and believes that’s where change can begin.
He said, “It’s about education. It’s about opportunities, like I said, and leadership.”
Elliott and his neighbors hope getting involved can stop acts of violence, like this shooting, from happening again.
“Nothing is worth somebody losing their life,” said Finney. “You know, anything can be fixed.”
Detectives have not released any information on a possible suspect or suspects.
