Final look ahead to Oscar Smith’s 6A state title showdown vs. Westfield

(WAVY) — One year ago, Oscar Smith and Westfield met in an epic 6A state championship game, a triple overtime thriller that went to Westfield.

Fast forward a year, and the same teams square off Saturday at Hampton University in another state title showdown.

Oscar Smith quarterback Shon Mitchell is going to William and Mary and he has rewritten the VHSL record book. One thing has eluded Mitchell however and that’s a state championship. Coach Bill Dee, in his first year as Tigers coach, won four state titles at Phoebus. Both Dee and Mitchell don’t need much motivation heading into tomorrow’s game.

“They’re eager to play,” said Bill Dee. “They know it’s for a state championship and they know Westfield beat them last year so it’s not hard to put together.”

“This time around we are expecting to win,” said Mitchell. “We have to go into the game with the mindset that you are going to win or you’ve already lost.”

Kickoff is Saturday at 4:30 at Hampton University.
