PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – A Portsmouth man is trying to find his Christmas wreath, after he says a thief stole it from his front door.
An empty hook hangs on the front of Renardo James’ door on Old Farm Road. Steps away, there are stray Christmas decorations, easy to miss, left in the grass.
“Yesterday, when I got home from work, I noticed that the wreath wasn’t on the door, so I walked around the house and looked. I didn’t see anything else different,” he said.
James checked his surveillance video and couldn’t believe what he saw next.
“I have never seen this guy before. I don’t know why he would have been on my property,” he said.
The video shows a man walking up to James’ door Wednesday around 1:00 p.m.
“He stood there for a second and kind of looked around,” James said.
After less than a minute, the man walked away, carrying what James says is the very wreath that had been hanging on that hook. It was a weekend project that James created with his 11-year-old daughter, and hung up on Sunday, he said.
“My daughter’s really into arts and crafts, so we decided to make a wreath together. We went around and got parts for the wreath and put it together… I was surprised. I couldn’t believe anyone would steal a wreath. I had never heard of anybody stealing a wreath. It was kind of disappointing, you know, not because of the value of the wreath, but because it was something I made with my daughter,” he said.
James says he contacted 10 On Your Side to alert others in the neighborhood.
“I guess if I put another one up, I’ll also lock the storm door,” he said.
Portsmouth police confirmed they are investigating the theft.
