HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — Students at a middle school in Hampton raised more than $1,000 to provide wreaths for the graves of Hampton veterans.

School officials say Eaton Fundamental Middle School students raised nearly $1,100 for Wreaths Across America Hampton. The money will go toward 71 wreaths for the graves of veterans.

“We thought a fundraiser for Wreaths Across America would be great because last year only 6,000 of the headstones had wreaths, and there are 33,000 headstones in Hampton alone,” said Athena Sivongsa, a social studies teacher at Eaton.

According to Sivongsa, 20 to 30 homeroom classes participated in the fundraising.

Wreaths Across America is a national nonprofit that works to expand the annual wreath-laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery.

Students and staff from Eaton will be attending the Hampton ceremony for National Wreaths Across America Day on Dec. 17
