Shooting near Portsmouth elementary school prompts lockdown

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Hodges Manor Elementary School in Portsmouth was locked down Wednesday afternoon because of a nearby shooting.

At 2:07 p.m., dispatchers received a report of a gunshot wound at Deal Drive and Cherokee Road. Officers responded and found a man who was shot in the elbow. His injuries appear to be non life-threatening.

Cherise Newsome with Portsmouth Public Schools says there was an additional police presence at the school. Officers stayed there until dismissal.
