PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Detectives are investigating a bank robbery in Portsmouth Friday.
The robbery happened just before 5 p.m. at the Wells Fargo located at 5700 Portsmouth Boulevard. Police were alerted after had activated its hold-up alarm.
Police said Friday that a suspect was in custody. This person was identified Monday as 42 year-old Thomas L. Bonney, Jr.
He is charged with robbery and use of a firearm in commission of a felony.
Investigators the suspect handed one of the bank’s tellers a note demanding money and told them he was armed with a handgun.
The teller then triggered the silent alarm, before placing bait money and stacks of currency inside of a bag. The suspect, who was later identified as Bonney, fled the area.
Bonney was taken into custody at Harrower Court and Maurice Street.
