RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Three state Transportation Department workers are being honored for saving a woman from her flooded SUV during a tropical storm in September.

Transportation Secretary Nick Tennyson presented the Extra Mile Award on Friday to William Audrey Creech, Marty Lee Jernigan and Stacy Allen Mizelle. They were honored at the state Board of Transportation meeting in Raleigh.

Officials say the three were putting out barricades in Bertie County during Tropical Storm Julia on Sept. 21 when Jernigan received a page that a woman was trapped in car that was swept off a road.

The three found the woman trapped in an SUV in water at least two feet deep and rising. They pulled the woman to safety

The Extra Mile Award recognizes department employees for significant contributions beyond their normal job duties.
