Teen shot in the back in Newport News

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – Police are working to track down the person who shot a 17-year-old Thursday afternoon in the East End of Newport News.

Officers were called to the 4500 block of Madison Avenue just before 3 p.m. and found the teen shot in the back near his shoulder blade, according to police spokesman Brandon Maynard.

The teen was taken to the hospital, but police say he is expected to recover.

Neighbors near 45th Street say shooting investigations are common but they will never be comfortable.

Police say several people who ran from the scene after the shooting were detained, but so far they have not released any suspect information.
