Local events mark World AIDS Day through the weekend

HAMPTON ROADS, Va. (WAVY) – Two organizations are holding several events over the next three days to recognize World AIDS Day.

The AIDS Care Center for Education and Support Services (ACCESS) and the LGBT Center of Hampton Roads are on a mission to promote the dignity and wellness of adults, families, youth and children impacted by HIV/AIDS, through quality support and prevention services.

Worldwide, it’s estimated an adolescent becomes newly infected every two minutes. The disease can be transmitted through sex, sharing of needles and from an infected mother to their baby during childbirth or breastfeeding.

You cannot get HIV from having casual contact with an infected person.

In South Africa alone, more than 3 million people on are antiretrovirals to fight the spread of the disease.

Apple is increasing its support for the fight against AIDS through the RED charity founded by rock singer Bono. Apple will increase its number of RED branded products, and will donate a dollar for each transaction made on Apple Pay both in-store and online.
