NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A woman walking her dog spotted a body in a Newport News retention pond Thursday morning and called police. A spokesperson for Newport News police said the body is a man. So far, police have not been able to identify him.

The emergency call came in at 9:44 a.m. The pond is in front of an apartment complex in the 600 block of Cobblestone Circle, which is right off Jefferson Avenue.

Police blocked off the entire area around the pond.

When police arrived on scene, they called the Newport News Fire Department, which sent its dive team into the water to retrieve the body.

The Medical Examiner arrived on scene a short while later. Officials do not know yet how long the body was in the water.

Police tell 10 On Your Side that the man did not have an obvious identification on him.

They will use dental records and finger prints to find out who he is.
