NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY/AP) — The U.S. Navy will try out a free mobile app for preventing sexual assaults and other criminal behaviors.

The LiveSafe app will allow sailors to anonymously report suspicious or criminal activity, lets sailors share their location if they’re walking home alone and provides contact information for emergency and counseling services.

Lieutenant Commander Matt Allen with the U.S. Fleet Forces Command tells WAVY.com that the Navy launched a six month-pilot program for sailors in Hampton Roads and Rota, Spain to use LiveSafe.

If successful, the app could be used at Navy installations around the world.

Norfolk State University also uses LiveSafe. The university rolled out the safety app last year.
