NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A student of Heritage High School is facing charges he was found having a loaded handgun at school on Tuesday.

Newport News police say officers were called to the school shortly after 12 p.m. on Nov. 29 after a security guard called requesting police.

Officers made contact with the security officer and a student at the school’s office. According to police, there was a black handgun on the desk as well as a magazine with 14 rounds of ammunition.

Police say school officials had overheard rumors Tuesday about a gun on school property.

The student, a 17-old-old male from Newport News, had agreed to talk during a search and handed over a loaded gun. The gun was confirmed to have been stolen out of Hampton.
