RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) – A Raleigh police officer and a suspect were shot during an incident at an apartment complex near Lake Johnson Wednesday afternoon, officials said.

The officer is being treated for serious but non-life-threatening injuries at Wake-Med. The suspect is in stable but critical condition at the same facility, city officials said.

Just before 2:45 p.m., officers responded to apartments on University Court off Lake Dam Road following a reported break-in.

An officer and a suspect were injured by gunfire during the incident, police said. Both were transported to WakeMed for treatment.

The State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) confirmed it was called in to investigate an officer-involved shooting and were on scene at the apartment complex.

People nearby said they heard what they thought was a gunshot.

“BOOM — I believe that’s a gunshot,” said Bin Liu who was home at the complex when the shooting happened.

The Raleigh Police Department’s Internal Affairs Unit will conduct an administrative investigation along with a criminal investigation into the shooting.

The SBI will submit its findings to the Wake County District Attorney.
