SMITHFIELD, Va. (WAVY) — Smithfield police are warning residents of a scam where callers are demanding money for overdue power bills.
Police say someone is making calls pretending to be from Dominion Power, asking residents and business owners to pay the bills using a prepaid card from a pharmacy or convenience store.
Residents are being asked to not provide any personal information — and to just hang up — if they receive one of these calls. The scammers show up on caller ID as 888-837-1696.
Dominion will never request bill payment using prepaid cards. Customers can contact Dominion with any questions at 1-866-366-4357.
