HAMPTON ROADS, Va. (WAVY) – What started out as a young woman volunteering one morning at the Vets House garden, has turned into lots more. Holly Hickson was so moved by what she learned about Vets House that she has made it her mission to help them each Christmas.
Vets House in Virginia Beach is not a shelter, it is a non-profit, 12 month program that provides living quarters, job hunting assistance, transportation, guidance and more. Holly wanted to do something extra to help so she spearheaded a Holiday Drive at her workplace, Pembroke Chiropractic. Dr Mark Soccio, office staff and patients ban together to collect all sorts of household items for Vets House. Anything you use at your house, they need…right down to TP and PT.
Donations also include non-perishables and funds. The drive is in its second year and began the first part of October.
It will run pretty close to Christmas day. Last year, Vets House brought a 15 passenger van to pick up all that was donated and it was jam packed. Donations filled half of the waiting room. From the looks of things, the drive is going just as well this year.
Holly could have gone home from gardening that first day and done nothing. She chose to do something. She chose to help and is motivating others to do the same. If you would like to learn more about Vets House, visit their web site at www.vetshouseinc.org or call them at 757 724 8614.
