Police ID employee killed in shooting near Norfolk convenience store

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — An employee was killed overnight in a shooting near a Berkley convenience store in Norfolk, according to police.

Police said they received a call just after midnight for someone who had been shot. Officers responded and found a victim, 41-year-old Toni Boulos, lying on the ground near the Shop ‘N Go store on E. Liberty Street.

Boulos was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital and was later pronounced dead.

A neighbor in the area said she heard five gunshots overnight.

10 On Your Side’s Erin Kelly spoke with a man Tuesday who said he was Boulos’ cousin and that they worked together at Shop ‘N Go.

“I got a bunch of texts on Facebook this morning, around like 6:00, and then I turned on the news and I found out on the news and as I was watching the news, my family was calling me and they let me know this morning that he passed,” said Louie Santana.

He said the family was distraught and doesn’t know why this happened.

“He carried his rosary all the time, everyday. And he was always a nice guy,” Santana said. “I don’t say that because he’s my family, but because he was. He helped out a lot of people out here.”

Santana said Boulos was from Lebanon and he had just seen him two days ago.

“Just Sunday. We had some tea together and we talked. We talked about our families. He was doing good, I was doing good. He was in high spirits,” he said.

Police identified Boulos as the victim Tuesday night. An employee at the store said they gave surveillance video to police.

This shooting was one of two homicides Norfolk police investigated overnight.

Officers were called to Azalea Garden Road around 1:30 a.m. for a reported shooting, and found a man lying in the middle of the street.

Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.

Police have not released information on possible suspects from either shooting.
