Public nominates candidates to fill vacant Franklin school board

FRANKLIN, Va. (WAVY) – City officials are one step closer to filling Franklin City Public Schools’ vacant school board.

During Monday night’s city council meeting, citizens nominated their picks for the seven open seats. The public hearing came just weeks after council requested that the previous members resign.

Several of those previous members were nominated during the meeting. Will Councill and Robert Holt were nominated by citizens, while Andrea Hall-Leonard and Jeanette Austin nominated themselves.

Community members also nominated entirely new candidates, from local CPAs to retired educators.

Nominations came in for every seat but for Ward 4. City officials plan to re-advertise for that position.

City council members plan to review resumes and interview each of the candidates next week. Officials hope to have at least four nominees chosen by a school board meeting scheduled in mid-December.
