Man injured in Hampton apartment fire

HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — A man suffered a minor burn injury during an apartment fire on Cape Dory Drive Monday morning.

According to Battalion Chief Anthony Chittum, the fire started around 9 a.m. in an apartment in the 20 block of Cape Dorey Drive off Hampton Club Drive.

Chittum says that the fire was contained to one apartment  Three people and two pets were displaced. One man suffered a minor burn injury and was taken to a burn center at a local hospital for treatment, Chittum said.

10 On Your Side spoke with the woman who lives in the apartment. She says her boyfriend was burned in the fire after a cooking mistake in the kitchen. She found out about the fire while she was work.

“I’m just tired. I feel numb,” said Samantha Johnstone.  The damage inside of her home is significant, and now she and her family has to look for new housing.

“I cried a lot today. My son, he’s been very supportive and holding my hand and trying to keep me sane. But mostly right now, I can’t even cry,” said Johnstone.

She says this is the third house fire she has lived through, and is trying to stay positive as her family has to move forward.

Johnstone said, “The whole wall in the kitchen, the wall beside the sink has been torn off.  Everything is covered in soot, the ceiling, the floors, the carpet is burnt.  The kitchen is pretty much totaled.”

She says her boyfriend is expected to be okay.

The Red Cross is is assisting the residents with lodging and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
