VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — Shoppers at the Lynnhaven Mall and stores surrounding the complex took advantage of discounts during early shopping hours starting Thanksgiving afternoon.

More than 200 people lined up outside the Toys R Us on Mall Drive before the doors opened at 5 p.m. Employees tell 10 On Your Side more than 500 people walked through the doors before 6 p.m.

“I say if you want to save money, you got to do your research and you got to come get in line,” said Shannon Gatling, who waited about two hours in line.

Hoverboards, action figures and Barbie sets were among the red-hot buys at Toys R Us.

“I like the excitement! I enjoy seeing the people and spreading the Christmas joy,” said one woman in line.

The JCPenney department store nearby opened their doors even earlier, at 3 p.m. Customers say about 150 people waited in line.

“People are going crazy over pillows for $2.99, and the boxes are empty and they are grabbing them as they come out,” said Jennifer Stocks.

Shoppers told 10 On Your Side’s Joe Fisher the crowds were smaller than last November and they believe there are not as many good buys this weekend. Many people say they will take advantage of price discounts online throughout the weekend and on Cyber Monday.
