Correctional officer fired after altercation with inmate

SUFFOLK, Va. (AP/WAVY) — A correctional officer in Suffolk has been fired following an altercation with an inmate.

According to the Associated Press, Western Tidewater Regional Jail superintendent Chris Smith says the officer has been sent a termination letter following an internal investigation into the Nov. 5 incident.

The incident began after the unidentified correctional officer and a nurse were delivering medication to an inmate housing area. At some point, the officer became involved in an altercation with inmate Gregory Lassiter.

Justin Bush, an attorney representing Lassiter told 10 On Your Side that his client was punched, choked, thrown to the ground and knocked unconscious during the incident.

Four other officers involved in the incident have been cleared following the internal investigation.

Video and witness statements have been turned over to the commonwealth’s attorney for further investigation.
