VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) – A man was injured after gunshots were fired in Virginia Beach Thursday evening.

Police say they were called to the 5600 block of Banbury Court at 8:52 p.m. When officers arrived on scene, they learned that several houses and multiple vehicles were hit by stray bullets. A man was also hurt. He suffered a non life-threatening injury and was treated by medics on scene. It’s not clear if he was injured by gunfire or something else.

Neighbors told 10 On Your Side that hearing the gunshots was terrifying.

“I could actually hear bullets hitting the back of the house and the other one hit my cousin’s car parked out front,” said Rayburn Butler, who lives on the corner of Banbury Court.

Butler was sitting in his dining room when the shooting started.  The Veteran said it sounded like a combat zone.

“It was just multiple gunfire, one behind the other,” Butler said. “I was really shocked and I was terrified. It scared me because sitting where I am and bullets hitting in the back of my house, I could’ve caught a bullet.”

He says he called police immediately. But he wasn’t the only one who got hit. Many cars parked along Hampshire Place saw shattered windows and bullet marks on their cars and homes.

The damage is temporary, but the threat of violence is not — leaving many residents asking, “why?”

“Why does this have to happen? Why? I mean, are we so torn with each other that we have to do this?” asked Nasir Johnson, who lives nearby. “I’m heartbroken. Heartbroken.”

Neighbors are thankful that no one was seriously injured, and they are calling for the violence to stop.

“You need to think about what you do and the actions and consequences of what you do,” said Butler.  “Because you cannot bring a life back that you take.”

There is no suspect information at this time. Police are still investigating. If you have any information, call the Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.
