SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A body washed up in the water on the Suffolk side of the Monitor Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel Wednesday morning.

Suffolk Police confirm they received a call at 10:45 a.m. about the discovery. Responding crews found the body of a man. He was identified as 40-year-old Adam Lee Meeks, of Suffolk.

Meeks’ neighbors noticed something was wrong when they saw his truck by a boat ramp on Respass Beach Road.

“We noticed our friend’s truck down there, which was a little after sunrise, which is kind of unusual because the fishermen are usually in before sunrise,” said Bill Andrews.

Andrews and others then began searching the water and the banks when one of them noticed something on the sandbar near the bridge.

“He saw the debris over there and he wanted to check it out, so I helped him load the canoe in the water and he went over there, checked it out and when he confirmed what it was, that’s when I dialed 911,” said Andrews.

Meeks’ kayak was found nearby. Police say he was not wearing a life jacket.

Police have classified this case as an undetermined death investigation. Foul play is not suspected. The investigation is ongoing.
