Danny Meeks resigns from Portsmouth City Council

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Councilman Danny Meeks resigned Tuesday from Portsmouth City Council.

The resignation is effective immediately. Meeks sent a letter to council members announcing his resignation, but he did not provide a reason for leaving.

“I have a lot of stuff going on over the next two meetings and I didn’t think that it was fair for the city that I was not be able to make the meetings,” Meeks told 10 On Your Side.

Meeks told 10 On Your Side in June that he would not be seeking re-election this year. He told WAVY’s Andy Fox that he wanted to spend time with his wife and four children.

“At this point in time in my life, with my little ones, I would like to spend more time with them,” Meeks said in the summer.

Meeks also said he was frustrated by distractions in the city.
