NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — City council is expected to vote Tuesday on whether or not to contribute more money toward a future Ikea in Norfolk.

The new ordinance would increase the amount the city is putting toward the project by $500,000, making Norfolk’s total contribution $5.5 million.

The extra money would offset unexpected costs from infrastructure improvements.

As part of the construction, Ikea will elevate the site for underground storm water retention and add structured parking. The store will also install a rooftop solar array on the building and provide a 25-foot buffer around Lake Wright.

Ikea’s contribution to the project is anticipated to be $75 million.

The new store is expected to open in the summer of 2018.
