NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – A barricade situation with an armed man inside his residence in the 8600 block of Glen Myrtle Ave ended peacefully, according to police.
Police say a call came in around 8:30 a.m. for a person with a weapon. The caller stated her 24-year-old brother pointed a gun at her and she left the residence. According to police, the caller heard a gunshot and when they arrived on scene, police saw the man with a gun before he went back inside the residence.
The barricade situation ended 12 hours later after negotiators were able to get the man, who was identified as Darrius Wyche, to come out peacefully.
Neighbors living in area say the hours long situation became an inconvenience for them, especially those living at the Breezy Point Apartments where Wyche was holed up inside.
“I know there are people out here that can’t get in their houses. They’re mad right now. There are kids out here waiting. It’s crazy,” said resident Xavier Bennett.
Zhalia Catron, who lives in apartment complex, says she had been waiting outside since nine in the morning.
“I’ve had to use neighbors’ bathrooms and all kinds of things,” she said about waiting.
Catron says not having access to her apartment caused problems for her.
“I haven’t been able to get anything done today.Nothing,” she said.
While they were concerned about waiting so long to get back inside, they were always concerned about the safety of Wyche.
“I guess it’s an inconvenience but you know at the end of it, we’re all an inconvenience at some point in time but the person, I want them to be okay,” said Kim Welch.
Police say Wyche is being held at the Norfolk City Jail and is charged with three misdemeanors: reckless handling of a firearm, brandishing a firearm, and threatening bodily harm.
Dispatchers say the original call came in for a domestic situation.
No other details have been released at this time.
