CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — A Chesapeake church spent the week preparing 500 Thanksgiving dinners for families in need.

The best part? These families don’t have a clue they’re getting this surprise!

10 On Your Side visited the Mount Lebanon Baptist Church Friday as they packed up boxes of nonperishable items.

On Saturday morning, dozens of church members will take the boxes, along with turkeys, to homes across Hampton Roads and parts of North Carolina.

“It’s exciting, it’s a great time to bond and it allows us to step outside of ourselves to show what we’re grateful for,” said Rachel Hunter of Mount Lebanon Baptist. “There are a lot of families that don’t have what we have, so we’re able to step outside of ourselves and help others and really portray the message of Christ, so we’re excited.”

Bishop Kim Brown’s family spends more than $18,000 each year to make the deliveries possible.

“The purpose is to help provide meals to those that struggle with hunger in our community… The entire fellowship comes together to help assist in making a difference in the lives of others,” said Kimberly Wimbish.
