PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Police have arrested and charged a man with trying to rob someone using an ATM in Portsmouth Thursday.

Just after 9:00 a.m., officers were called to the 7-Eleven at 600 Frederick Boulevard for an attempted robbery. The person who called dispatchers about the incident said the suspect fled in a vehicle.

After an investigation, detectives charged 28 year-old Jovonte K. Trotter, of Portsmouth, with attempted robbery. He is currently in custody of the Portsmouth Sheriff’s Office.

Portsmouth police want to warn residents that with the holiday shopping season approaching, you should be aware of your surroundings at all times when shopping or using an ATM. If you notice anything suspicious, call police right away. If you become a victim of a crime, police say you should fully cooperate with the suspect. If you’re a witness, police ask that you call them immediately after the suspect is gone.
