VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — A Virginia Beach man convicted in the 2014 murder of his mother will serve 13 years in prison.

29-year-old Damien Michael Dukes, formerly of the 4200 block of Old Lyne Road, was sentenced to 30 years in prison with 17 years suspended for second-degree murder.

Dukes was found guilty after a one-day trial. He had pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity.

Prosecutors say on April 10, 2014, Dukes called 911 and told the dispatcher he had murdered his mother, 54-year-old Victory Star Winner, the day before.

Dukes had been staying with his mom in a room she rented at the Studios for Less hotel in Virginia Beach. According to prosecutors, the two got into an argument because Winner told Dukes she was moving and he would need to find somewhere to live. Dukes also told the dispatcher he thought his mother was going to take his car and his cat.

Prosecutors say Dukes hit Winner in the head with a dumbbell weight multiple times, then covered her with a blanket. He told the dispatcher which room police could find his mother and that he would cooperate with authorities. Officers arrived on scene, took Dukes into custody and pronounced Winner deceased.
