NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A wanted man came close to hitting a police officer with his vehicle Saturday in Newport News.

At 9″45 a.m., officers responded to the parking lot of the Wal-Mart at 6111 Jefferson Avenue after an anonymous tipster got a call that a wanted person, 41-year-old John Edward Thacker, was there. Police saw the vehicle described by the caller entering the parking lot. Thacker was inside. Officers approached the vehicle and ordered Thacker to get out.

Police say Thacker then recklessly sped forward to evade police, nearly hitting an officer. The officer took warrants out against Thacker for reckless driving, evading and eluding, and driving while under suspension.

Thacker, of the 3000 block of Elsom Moscot Drive in Mattaponi, is still at large.
