NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Norfolk police are investigating a shooting on Granby Street that left one man dead Monday morning.

The shooting happened outside of the Bay Food Mart near 27th Street in the Park Place neighborhood. Police said they were called to the scene for a reported shooting around 8:15 a.m.

A man was found outside of the mart with a gunshot wound. Paramedics took the man to the hospital, but he later died from his injuries.

Police arrested 29-year-old Leonard Bullock, of Norfolk, at the scene. He has been charged with second-degree murder and use of a firearm in commission of a felony. He’s being held in the Norfolk City Jail with no bond.

Police said a preliminary investigation shows Bullock and the victim were involved in an altercation inside the mart before the shooting happened. As the fight continued at the front door, Bullock allegedly shot Barnes.

Renee Barco, who lives nearby, said, “It’s just too much. I’ve been here five years and it doesn’t seem like it’s getting any better.” She said she was putting her granddaughter on the bus when police arrived.

“I mean, this is crazy. It’s uncalled for. My heart grieves for this because I know that this place has got to be a better place. I’m ready to leave,” Barrco said.

Police identified the victim as 38-year-old Michael Barnes. His sister, Michaella Barnes, told 10 On Your Side her brother had two children, ages 11 and 13.

“We grew up in New York together, we shared the same bedroom … he was my brother,” Michaella Barnes said. “It’s senseless.”

A man at the food mart told 10 On Your Side he couldn’t talk about the shooting.

“To know that you’re at work and this can happen to you…it’s unreal,” Barnes said.
