NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A firefighter hurt his hand while working to put out the flames in an overnight fire, after crews saved two residents.

Crews raced to a home on West Little Creek Road in Norfolk, near Wards Corner, around 1 a.m. Monday.

Officials say the fire spread from the first floor to the second. Three residents got out safely, but crews had to rescue two people from the  second floor.

One firefighter hurt his hand putting out the flames. Officials say he has a minor injury and is expected to be OK.

One resident told 10 On Your Side he was sleeping when the fire started, but woke up when firefighters knocked on his upstairs window. Crews pulled him from that window to safety.

Investigators say there is smoke damage inside the home. The cause has yet to be determined.
