Hampton and Norfolk State both pick up MEAC wins

ORANGEBURG, S.C. (AP) — Greg Hankerson ran for the game-winning touchdown as Norfolk State came from behind to edge South Carolina State 13-10 on Saturday.

With the Spartans (3-7, 2-5 MEAC) trailing 10-6 midway through the fourth quarter, Hankerson hit Marcus Taylor for 34 yards which set up his 4-yard scoring run three plays later, giving NSU the lead for the first time, 13-10, with 10:58 to play and they held on for the win.

It was the Spartans’ first ever victory against SC State at home.

Hankerson had 132 yards passing and led on the ground with 56 rushing yards for the Spartans. Cameron Marouf kicked field goals of 41 yards — his longest this season — and 38 yards.

Marouf kicked his second field goal early in the second half and the Spartans trailed 7-6 with 12:08 left in the third.

Caleb York threw for 58 yards for the Bulldogs (3-6, 3-3) and was intercepted twice.

HAMPTON, Va. (AP) — Yahkee Johnson ran for 112 yards, including a 35-yard touchdown run that proved to be the winner, and Hampton beat Savannah State 28-24 on Saturday.

Chase Powell’s 95-yard kickoff return for a touchdown gave Hampton (5-4, 5-2 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) a 21-3 lead with 4:38 left in the first half.

Savannah State (3-5, 3-3) responded with a seven-play, 63-yard drive capped by T.J. Bell’s 4-yard TD run that made it 21-10 at halftime and sparked a 21-0 run by the Tigers.

A 1-yard scoring run by Nicholas Bentley with 9:09 left in the third quarter and, after Stefen Banks’ strip-sack of Jaylian Williamson, Marcus Lee Jr.’s fumble recovery in the end zone gave Savannah State a 24-21 lead early in the fourth quarter.

Hampton responded with a seven-play, 71-yard drive — capped by Johnson’s winning run — just 3 minutes, 8 seconds later.
