Police: Group in clown masks fired shots in Newport News neighborhood

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A man told police he saw a group of people wearing clown masks fire gunshots in his Newport News neighborhood early Tuesday morning.

At 2:31 a.m., officers were dispatched to the 700 block of River Rock Way for a report of gunshots heard. When police arrived, they spoke with a 48-year-old man who said there were about nine people, all wearing clown masks and dark clothing, in front of his property.

The victim said his barking dog woke him up, so he went downstairs, turned on the porch light, and as he opened his door, gunshots were fired, police say. The victim says he saw at least two people with guns. After the gunshots, the group ran away toward the front of the neighborhood.

Officers found shell casings in the area where the gunshots were heard.

Police also spoke to the victim’s neighbor, a 35-year-old man, who said the group of people broke into his car. The man said they stole a handgun from his vehicle, along with his military ID, driver’s license, credit cards and headphones.

There was no injuries reported and the victim’s home was not damaged.

Police are still investigating.
